Outdoor Saunas are increasingly popular in the UK, offering numerous health benefits. However, the absence of a regulatory framework can lead to safety issues, inconsistent quality, and other health and safety risks.
On Monday 20th May the British Sauna Society hosted its first Sauna Summit, attracting some 250 delegates from all over the UK and Ireland, the US, Norway and Finland.
A highlight was the "Sauna Operators – From Pioneer Birches to Strong Oak Trees" the panelists included Charlie Duckworth (Community Sauna Baths), Kirsty Carver (Soul Water Sauna), and Callum Scott (Haar Sauna), moderated by Liz Watson (Beach Box Brighton).
The panel discussed the following topics: collaboration and competition; Sauna Industry Regulation; Individuality / Independence.
With years of experience and a deep understanding of the industry, Callum Scott (Haar Sauna) has been vocal about the need for change and has outlined a clear vision for what a regulatory framework should look like.
The UK lacks unified sauna regulations, which can result in substandard construction, unsafe practices, and varied user experiences.
Key reasons for regulation include:
Safety Standards: Ensuring proper building and installation, ventilation, and the use of non-toxic materials.
Quality Assurance: Setting high HSE benchmarks for consistent and high-quality sauna experiences.
Professional Training: Certification programs for operators to enhance industry professionalism.
An important step towards regulation was brought forward by Callum Scott (Haar Sauna) during the discussion: "Establishing a regulatory framework will enhance safety, improve quality, and build consumer trust, ensuring a secure and thriving sauna industry in the UK."
Callum Scott (Haar Sauna) proposed a regulatory body such as the "Sauna Stewardship Council." The Sauna Stewardship Council would be the leading international standard for sauna regulation and safeguarding. It would assess if sauna businesses are well-managed and environmentally sustainable, ensuring a secure and thriving sauna industry in the UK.
After the event, it was found that Haar Sauna's advocacy is gaining traction among other sauna operators and, of course, the British Sauna Society.
