Discovering Innovation and Inspiration: Iceland Trip Funded by HIE

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on the Iceland Innovation Trip, generously funded by Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE). What an inspiring journey it was - blending breathtaking landscapes, a vibrant community of passionate entrepreneurs, and a wealth of insights into sustainability and innovation.

The trip coincided with Iceland Innovation Week, where I participated in a series of informative workshops. These sessions offered not only valuable knowledge but also a chance to connect with inspiring minds from around the world. Thanks to HIE’s support, I was able to dive deeply into the innovative spirit thriving across this remarkable country.

One of the trip’s highlights was visiting some spectacular spas and witnessing firsthand the customer journeys that make these places so special. Among these, Sky Lagoon stood out as a true gem - an incredible experience that showcases Iceland’s unique approach to relaxation and wellbeing through its innovative seven-stage journey.

It was a perfect opportunity to unwind, relax, and connect with other Scottish entrepreneurs in a serene setting.

Another extraordinary experience was visiting Climeworks, where I received a fascinating private tour of their cutting-edge carbon capture technology. Witnessing such pioneering work firsthand was truly inspiring and gave me fresh perspectives on sustainability solutions.

Of course, a standout moment was meeting Halla Tómasdóttir, the President of Iceland. It was a profound experience to discuss the links between Shetland and Iceland, and I shared my hopes for a direct ferry route connecting Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Shetland.

Halla was highly complementary of Haar Sauna’s values and vision, and she warmly welcomed the idea of “sauna” making its way to Iceland — a true testament to how shared culture can foster new collaborations.

Throughout this journey, I gained valuable insights into sustainable practices, innovative approaches, and collaborative strategies - all set against the stunning backdrop of Iceland’s awe-inspiring scenery. It was a perfect blend of adventure, learning, and meaningful connections that will undoubtedly influence my work moving forward.
