Your first sauna: what to expect
If you’ve never tried sauna before, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure. You might wonder how hot it will be, how long you’re meant to stay in, or whether you’ll feel out of place.
Most people who come to Haar for the first time have had those same thoughts - myself included!
The good news is that sauna is much simpler than it sounds.
When you arrive, there’s no rush. You’ll have time to get settled, get changed, and ease into the space. Once inside, the heat can feel intense at first, but that usually passes as your breathing slows and your body starts to relax into it.
I was quite surprised how quickly my body adjusted to the heat! (and how quickly it started to crave the cold!)
There’s no right or wrong way to do sauna. You can stay in for a few minutes or longer if it feels right for you. You can chat, sit quietly, step outside for fresh air, or take a break whenever you need. Even a short time in the heat counts. Before long, you’ll find your own rhythm of heat and cold that works for you.
Cold plunges or sea dips are always optional. Some people love the contrast, others prefer to stick with sea air between rounds - or even just the wind and rain! There’s no expectation either way, and no pressure to do anything that doesn’t feel right for you.
Community sessions are relaxed and welcoming. People often arrive not knowing anyone and leave as friends, having shared conversations, laughs, and the heat together. It’s an easy, friendly space where no one feels out of place.
Once the session is over, most people leave feeling calm, warm, and pleasantly tired. It’s the kind of feeling that stays with you for the rest of the day, whether you head back to work, home, or straight to bed. Your body feels warm and relaxed, your mind a little quieter.
If you’ve been thinking about trying sauna for the first time, a community session is a great place to start. They’re designed to be easy, supportive, and unhurried.
All you really need is a towel, swimwear, water and something warm to throw on after your session.
Come as you are. Or bring a friend. Stay as long as feels right.
We hope to see you in the heat soon. And if you have any questions, or anything you’re not sure about, please reach out - we’re always happy to help.
